Clos Tonnerre is a small, Premier Cru vineyard in the Mercurey appellation of the Cote Chalonnaise sub-region of Burgundy. It is planted to Pinot Noir and lies at the central, lower end of the strip of Premier Cru vineyards that form a band around the south-facing slopes just north of the town itself. The 2.8-hectare (6.9 acre) vineyard is tucked up against the edges of the wider Mercurey town, with houses closing off its northern and western borders. It is neighbored to the east by the similarly-sized lieu-dit of Les Vasées. Vineyards below (south) are classified as basic, village-level sites. The vineyard here is on the classic Burgundian clay-limestone but on a particularly hard limestone substrate. Domaine Michel Juillot has the lion’s share of vineyard holdings here and Clos Tonnerre wines from other producers are rare.
